In-Class discussion of Courage, week 1

We will begin to discuss the topic of Courage in our lessons together this week.  We’ll be considering the Courage it can take to try something new.  Our in-class discussion lesson for this week follows below:

“What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?” — Vincent Van Gogh (painter)

Starting anything new can be scary.  Even when we are excited about trying something new, we usually ask ourselves, “Do I really want to do this?”  Sometimes we don’t really have much choice, like when you have to move up to a new grade, or even to a whole new school.  Other times, however, it is completely up to us.  Our lives would be pretty boring if we’re afraid to try anything new.  Trying something new takes real courage.  We can build our courage and confidence by pushing ourselves to do something we may be afraid to do.

Discussion Questions:

  1.  Do you remember your first karate lesson?
  2.  Did it feel strange to come into the school for the first time?
  3. Did you feel you needed some courage to actually come out onto the floor and take your first lesson?

Please share your answers to these questions, and your thoughts about Courage, with our school community by using the form below.
