Goal Setting, week 1

During our in-class discussion lesson this week, we will talk about Goal Setting in our martial arts instruction.  Our in-class discussion lesson for this week follows below:

“The most important thing about goals is having one.” — Geoffrey F. Abert (Author)

Goal Setting:  The process of identifying something you want to accomplish.

The martial arts belt system is a system for setting and reaching goals.  It teaches us to set goals, attain them, and mark our achievements.  We can understand our goals with the help of the different colored belts.  There are short-term goals we set for ourselves — earning our next achievement stripe.  Our medium-term goal is to earn advancement to our next belt.  If you want to earn your black belt, set that as your long-term goal.  Use your achievement stripes and your colored belts to help mark each step you take toward your goal of black belt.

Discussion Questions:

  1.  Is goal setting important?
  2. What is a goal you have set for yourself?
  3.  Do you know someone who has achieved an important goal?

Please share your answers to these questions, and your thoughts about Goal Setting, with our school community by using the form below.
