The Art of Learning, Week One

We will be discussing The Art of Learning together in class this week, focusing on the importance of patience in learning.

“Fall seven times, stand up eight” — Japanese proverb.

Have you ever heard the saying:  “Everything starts with a single step”?  This is taken from our early experience in life.  When we are learning to walk, we try to pull ourselves up and grasp on to something — then we dare to take that first step.  Usually, we fall down, but we get back up and have the courage to try again.  Guess what — we fall down again.  But, we are determined to walk and get from one place to another, so we try again.  This is learning, and learning takes a lot of patience.  This goes for learning karate, learning to play the guitar, or for learning to read.

Discussion Questions:

1)  What does patience mean?

2)  Do you think you have patience?

3)  What are you working on right now that will take patience for you to learn?
