March 27 , 2006 Congratulations to Maggie Jones, 12, who earned her probationary Black Belt rank in traditional Taekwondo. The daughter of Leslie and Leslie Jones, she is a 7th-grader at Holston Middle School. To earn her Black Belt, Maggie completed a comprehensive test of her Taekwondo knowledge and skills including traditional patterns, free-sparring, self-defense techniques, board-breaking and physical endurance.
Feb. 18 , 2006 The AAU Taekwondo Nationals will be in Knoxville this year — and a dozen Broadway Family Karate students have already earned the right to compete at the prestigious tournament with their strong performances at the regional qualifying tournament in Atlanta. Jan. 28, 2006 — Broadway Family Karate students continued to dominate the area’s Combat Sword competition scene. The latest tournament, hosted by Broadway Family Karate, included both long and short Combat Sword competition as well as point-sparring based on Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) competition guidelines. Here, Thomas Cinnamon (left) goes head to head with Connor Minton under the eye of instructor and center referee Tom Booker. The final tournament in the Scoutheast Combat Sports Association’s competition season will be Saturday, April 29.
Jan. 21, 2006 Congratulations to Mr. Booker, who recently earned AAU certification as a 4th Dan in Taekwondo. Kathy Wieczerza, the AAU's Southeast District director for Taekwondo and a 6th Dan in the art, traveled from Nashville to conduct the comprehensive, three-hour test. Along with traditional Taekwondo forms, the grueling test covered sparring, Taekwondo technique, teaching technique, self-defense and several board breaks. Mr. Booker also submitted samples of his research and original scholarship into the art as part of his certification application.
