Determination, week 1

We will begin our discussion of Determination during our lessons this week.  We’ll be talking about the relationship between Perseverance (one of the Tenets of Taekwondo) and Determination.   Our in-class discussion for this week follows below:

“Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.” — Og Mandino (author)

Determination:  never giving up — making a decision, and then acting on it.

Determination is another way of describing one of the Tenets of Taekwondo — Perseverance.   When we are determined, we have decided on a goal and work with purpose to achieve it.  Let’s say  that you decide to earn your Black Belt — that is a big goal, and will take you a lot of time and effort to accomplish.  It will be hard sometimes.  You’ll need determination to achieve this.  Our determination helps us push through difficulties and setbacks on our way.  The strength of our determination helps us take something that is a “work in progress”, and turn it into an actual achievement.

Discussion Questions:

  1.  What is something you are determined to accomplish in karate?
  2.  What are some things that you would like to do over the summer?
  3.  What is something you are determined to accomplish this summer?

Please share your answers to these questions, and your thoughts about Determination, with our school community by using the form below.
